Torne River it the source or our inspiration and the building material of ICEHOTEL. Each summer, we give back the loan to the river and ICEHOTEL is once again fresh, flowing water. But our activities affect the climate after all. That is why we decided to be become CO2negative (carbon dioxide negative) by the year 2015.
To achieve the goal we will produce, by our selves and in partnership with Gävle Energi, more renewable energy than we consume. Part of this production will take place in Jukkasjärvi. Here you can follow our work towards becoming CO2negative together with Gävle Energi, under the brand name Källmärkt*.
Our climate goal includes all our operations in Jukkasjärvi, all activities and ground transportation, all our ICEBARs and events around the world.
The first step towards the goal of becoming CO2negative, was when ICEHOTEL signed a contract with the energy producing company Gävle Energi which according to Greenpeace is one of "Sweden's most environment-friendly energy companies."
Today ICEHOTEL buys electricity that is Källmärkt, i.e.100% renewable energy. This means that we do not emit carbon dioxide through our energy consumtion. Källmärkt electricity ensures that our total electricity supply is based on renewable energy, such as wind, water and biofules.
The next step will be to reduce our electricity consumption by 15% over the next fiscal year, September 1st 2008 to August 31st 2009.
In spring 2008 Gävle Energi and ICEHOTEL patented the brand name CO2negative. This means that no one else may use the name without our permission. However, we like to share our ideas and methods to those who want to work for a better environment and climate. ICEHOTEL Technical Visits is a way of doing this. In the open. *Källmärkt = a Swedish word for source mark
