How to heat ICEHOTEL and cool the world

Even if ICEHOTEL by definition is a cold place, there’s more to it than meets the eyes… or ice. Several thousand square metres are actually heated (but - in a cool way so to speak) by ground source heat pumps from Swedish company NIBE.

Sweden is a cold country compared to many others. Let’s face it – there are not too many countries where an idea such as ICEHOTEL could be made into reality. So talking about house heating is just about as normal for Swedes as it is for the British to talk about the weather. And it comes as no surprise that some of the most innovative heating technologies in the world have a strong base here. Such as ground source heat pumps - the heating solution of choice for Swedes today.

This is a technology that not only saves energy – it literally cools the planet. And that makes it a perfect solution for ICEHOTEL Not only in the quest to reduce CO2 emissions. But in order to keep the ground cold – and the Ice from melting!

Ground source heat pumps do not need any hot springs or similar. Solar energy stored in the ground can be collected via drilled holes or dug trenches, and used to heat a home – or a hotel. Warmth builds up underground from the first days of spring when the surface of the earth starts to thaw, to high summer, when the rays of the midday sun penetrate deep down into the ground. By the time the autumn leaves are falling, there’s enough energy stored in the ground to heat up your house throughout the coldest winter.

And – as that energy is brought up – the ground is kept cool. Until next spring…

At the same time up to 80% less energy is used, compared to traditional heating methods.

ICEHOTEL has been using NIBE heat pumps since the year 2000. Today more than 15 heat pumps are in use to heat more than 30 buildings. This has led to a reduction of CO2 emissions by several hundred tons. And savings of several 100 thousand Euro.

Pretty cool – to say the least.
