ICEHOTEL / Get married at ICEHOTEL

The happiest day of our life - at ICEHOTEL

Couples from all over the world come to Jukkasjärvi to pledge eternal fidelity to each other. Children from far and wide are baptized here. And already married couples can have their marriage blessed in the celestially beautiful Ice church.

The need to show respect, to focus on one’s own thoughts and reflect on the nature of things is a feeling you get from an encounter with ICEHOTEL. Many pieces of life’s puzzle seem to fall into place here, in the Ice Church on the Torne River.

The ceremony and the unique experience of the place, the ice, the snow and the almost unreal environment leave no-one untouched. And perhaps the shared memories and experiences are stronger for the very reason that the church is impermanent. When no architectural memento exists, the memories and the vows exchanged are especially cherished.

Couples who wish to get married in the summer, bathed in the warmth and light of the midnight sun, may choose Jukkasjärvi Church, the oldest wooden chapel in Lapland – or why not an outdoor wedding in the countryside?

Although our church returns to the river in spring, love is eternal.

How to spend your wedding night

Take the opportunity to make your wedding night a very special one!
Spend the night surrounded by art work made of ice and snow, by artists from all over the world. In the morning you will be awakened with a cup of hot lingonberry juice.

In ICEHOTEL it never gets colder than –5 to -8ºC, regardless of the fact that the outdoor temperature sometimes drops down to -30º. You sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on a bed built by ice blocks, a wooden frame, mattress and it is topped with reindeer skins.

If you want to book an Art Suite for your wedding night, please notice that between 10am and 6pm ICEHOTEL is open for the public. After closing it doors, it's only available for guests.

Frequently asked questions

How long before my wedding do I have to book?

The planning time varies from a month or so to a couple of years. As a rule, bigger weddings take longer to plan since travel arrangements, accommodation and table bookings all have to be co-ordinated. The wedding co-ordinator at ICEHOTEL assists with every aspect of planning.

What about clothing?

Our advice is to think warm. If the bride wants to wear a traditional wedding dress, wear something warm underneath and supplement this with a warm jacket or cape. Don’t be shy of unconventional choices when it comes to clothing.

Can foreigners get married in Sweden?

Wedding couples from countries outside of Sweden has to make a personal and formal visit to the local Tax Office in Kiruna and apply for a certificate regarding consideration of impediments to marriage (hindersprövning). For more information, please contact the Wedding Coordinator at ICEHOTEL.

What about same-sex marriages?

Same-sex marriage in Sweden has been legal since 1 May 2009, following the adoption of a new, gender-neutral law on marriage making Sweden the seventh country in the world to open marriage to same sex couples nationwide. ICEHOTEL welcomes all who wish to get married here.
