WELCOME TO OUR SUITE

To create an artistic challenge for ourselves we have decided to “go within”. The suite is filled with sculpture which are carved within the blocks of ice. Realizing the sculptures turned out to be difficult because you have to think and act inside out and backwards to your intended final result.

Some of the figures are left hollow while others are filled with snow, creating the visual juxtaposition of imaginary and real. The sculpture at the entry “Reflecting Within” is a contemplation on Tims’ 90 year old father confronting his own mortality in the mirror as he approaches his impending death. As humans, we spend our lives denying and avoiding recognition of our mortality. But for some few the moment of acknowledgement does come. We, just as the ice, are all made of water and will one day melt away.

ARTISTS

TIM LINHART is an ice artist with 36 years experience working with ice as an artistic material and the originator of the art form of Ice Music. He works with ice sculpture architecture and musical instrument development. Each winter since 1998 then Tim has built an orchestra and concert hall of snow and ice including numerous ice instruments and conducted Ice Music concerts in locations in the United States Italy and Sweden. Tim is an American now living with his family in Luleå Sweden.

GIOVANNA MARTINEZ loves to travel and to get in touch with different ways of life and cultures. She fell in love with Sápmi’s beautiful nature and she keeps on coming back to Jukkasjärvi, where she usually works in the building team at Icehotel. She is curious and interested in many different things, from music to rock climbing to filmmaking and storytelling. She loves learning languages, practicing yoga, spending time out in nature, sharing creative moments with others. She’s finishing her Master’s degree in Peace studies.
